GNCHR at a scientific conference on safeguarding the rule of law and human rights organised by the HSILIR and DUTh

The Greek National Commission for Human Rights (GNCHR) participated in a scientific conference entitled: “The Defense of the Rule of Law in the International Society Against Contemporary Challenges”, organised by the Hellenic Society of International Law and International Relations (HSILIR) and the Democritus University of Thrace (DUTh), which took place on 21 and 22 May 2026 in Komotini.

On 21 May, during the 1st Panel entitled “Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law under Challenge”, the session was chaired by the President of GNCHR, Professor of International Law at the Faculty of Law of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Maria Gavouneli, who also participated in the roundtable discussion on 22 May. Eva Tzavala, GNCHR Legal Officer, Coordinator of Scientific Staff and Head of the Scientific Organisation Unit, also took part in the same panel, presenting a paper entitled: “Strengthening the Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights in European Union Member States through Funding Instruments.”

On 22 May, GNCHR participated in the 3rd Panel entitled “Challenging the international refugee protection regime: migration flows under pressure”, where Dr. Christos Tsevas, GNCHR Human Rights Advisor, delivered a presentation entitled: “International Migration Law and the Rule of Law under Challenge: Between Fragmentation and Securitisation.”

The above presentations highlighted the role and work of GNCHR in addressing these issues.
