CHARALAMBOS SAVAKIS

Charalambos Savakis, M.D. Ph.D., born in Athens in 1949, is Professor of Molecular Biology and Molecular Genetics at the Medical School of the University of Crete, and President & Scientific Director of the Biomedical Research Center "Alexander Fleming" in Athens, Greece. A graduate of the Experimental School of the University of Athens, he received his MD from the University of Athens and a PhD in Cell and Developmental Biology from Harvard University. After completing an EMBO postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Cambridge Department of Genetics, he joined in 1984 the University of Crete Medical School as Assistant Professor, and the Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at the Foundation for Research & Technology Hellas (IMBB-FoRTH) as Adjuct Researcher. His research has focused mainly on the biology of transposable elements and their use for insect genetic engineering and functional genomic analysis in insects and in mammals. A member of EMBO, he has served as member and Vice-Chair of the Greek National Research and Technology Council (ΕΣΕΤ), Chairman of the Biology and Biotechnology Committee of ΕΣΕΤ, Chairman of the Board & Chief Executive of the National  Organization for Medicines (EOΦ), Chairman of the EMBL Council and Senior Advisor to the President of the European Research Council (ERC). He is founding member of the Graduate Program on Bioethics of the University of Crete, member of the Greek National Bioethics Commission and member of the Greek National Commission for Human Rights.
